Full Rare Album Thursday #10 & #11: (1967-8) The Chocolate Watchband’s ‘No Way Out’ and ‘Inner Mystique’

This week’s ‘Full Rare Album Thursday’ is a doozy, no, its a double-doozy. Way back in 1965 a garage rock band called The Chocolate Watchband formed in Cupertino, California. They disbanded two years later in 1967 but managed to release two of the finest albums ['No Way Out' & 'Inner Mystique'] of the psychedelic era. (’Inner Mystique’, an album that the band itself, had allegedly little say in putting together in its final version was actually released in 1968

Crookers, Santogold, Elbow,

TONIGHT - CROOKERS - JUNE 28th

Crookers (Italy) are at Wrongbar tonight (that’s Saturday, June 28th, 2008). So if you’re in town head on over.

SANTOGOLD

You’ve probably already heard this, but over the last week or so I’ve been listening to Santogold’s self titled album. It’s pretty damn catchy. ‘Shove it’ and ‘Say Aha’ are produced by Switch and ‘Starstruck’ is produced by Switch and Diplo.

ELBOW

Elbow’s (UK) latest (4th) album ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’ is excellent. Somehow it’s in the same post as ‘Crookers’ and ‘Santogold’. In case you haven’t heard this yet, its set to be one of the year’s best albums so go procure it.

Addictive Flash Game Alert: Ant Buster

This has absolutely nothing to do with music, but this flash game ‘Ant Buster‘ has got to be the most addictive flash game of all time. The furthest I’ve gotten is level 65. I’m trying to catch up to ‘Entros’: Entoros, wrote on June 9th, 2008: LOL U GUYZ R NUBZ I GOT TO LVL 2581!’ It’s a little tricky at first, but I know you’ll get the hang of it.

Full Rare Album Thursday #9 (1969) Kaleidoscope - Side Trips

Kaleidoscope’s (US) ‘Side Trips’ is one of my personal favorite albums to, on occasion, pull out and listen to. It never seems to dull and I never seem to get bored of it. It’s a blend of late 60’s psych, American traditional folk and a whole slew of other things. At times they would fuse Middle Eastern themes into their songs using Turkish instruments. My favourite songs on the album include ‘Egyptian Gardens’, ‘Oh Death’, ‘Keep your Mind open’ and ‘Please’. Enjoy!

Hall and Oates, MSTRKRFT remix Usher, ‘Burn it All Down’.

So, aside from re-starting work on my thesis (which was lost when the laptop it was on was stolen in New Jersey) I’m working at a full time job for the next month or so. Essentially, I’m taking GPS readings in Toronto - so if you see a skinny looking dork in a reflector vest walking around downtown with GPS equipment on a tripod come say ‘hi’ and buy me some Gatorade or vitamin water. It’s CHOT out there!!

*RIGHT CLICK, THEN PRESS ‘SAVE AS’ TO DOWNLOAD*

Unlike other acts out there MSTRKRFT have maintained the ability to keep releasing wicked remix after remix, like this one:

Also, check this out:

New Ladytron

Here’s a quick update: ‘That’s Wizard’ favourites Ladytron release their latest album ‘Velocifero’ on June 3rd. You can download it now on itunes, or whatever digital music buying software you use. I’ve only heard a couple songs but the single ‘Ghosts’ is really damn catchy. I have no idea what the lyrics mean, but I find I’m always humming it.

Ladytron play the Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West) on July 4th, 2008. It’s a FREE show, so you really cant go wrong. The show at the Opera House last year, or was that two years ago, was excellent.

Drone, Prog, Metal: ‘Boris’, ‘Van Der Graaf Generator’ and ‘Earth’

BORIS

An upcoming show that I’m really excited about is the Japanese trio Boris and Torche at Lee’s Palace (529 Bloor St. W) on Monday, July 14, 2008. For a measly $15 bucks you can catch one of the best bands around. Plus, I don’t remember them ever playing a Toronto show, so this might be their fist. For more Info click here.Their, 14th, and newest album ‘Smile’ is one of the year’s best, but over the years they’ve released a whole slew of albums. See their label Southern Lord records for album info. ‘Flower Sun Rain’ is a song off “Smile”, and its quite a good and accessible track.

the VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR

Below is a song from the new Van Der Graaf Generator album “Trisector” aptly titled ‘over the hill’. But, surprisingly these guys still seem to be able to pump out some pretty damn good music. It’s surprising considering they got their start in 1967. The album’s not That special, but it might just fill that prog-hole in your life.

ipods.jpgDOWNLOAD: Van Der Graaf Generator - Over the Hill

EARTH

Also on the ‘drone’ front: If you’re into Boris, and you’ve never heard of Seattle based band Earth, do yourself a favour and go out and procure their latest album “The Bee’s Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull”, it’s also one of the best albums of the year. ‘Engine of Ruin’ offers a taste of the album.

Rare Full Album Thursday #8 - (1970) Spirit - The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus

So, I’ve had a super busy last week and a half, so that explains the extreme lateness of this installation of ‘Rare Album Thursday’. This one isin’t really so rare, but its a doozy. Released in November of Nineteen Hundred and Seventy, The Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus is a sort-of science fiction concept album by the band ‘Spirit’. It features Spirit’s most famous song, other than ‘I Got a Line on You’, called ‘Nature’s Way’ .

Full Rare Album Thursday #7 - (1968) Procol Harum - Shine on Brightly

PROCOL HARUM’s SHINE ON BRIGHTLY is an album that I consider a real hidden gem. The LP that I have has really, over the years, been mangled. It’s covered in scratches and pops, which add to the ambiance, but not much else. This MP3 copy is clean, actually cleaner than I’ve ever head.

Following on the Success of their ‘67 hit ‘A Whiter Shade of Pale’, Procol Harum released ‘Shine on Brightly’, which featured an entire side devoted to “In Held T’was I”, a 17 minute epic song suite that, for 1968, must have been quite a jolt. This is a couple years before prog would accustom listeners to long songs.

Enjoy!

In case you were wondering, below are the heady lyrics to ‘In Held T’was I’….

Glimpses of Nirvana
In the darkness of the night, only occasionally relieved by glimpses of Nirvana as seen through other people’s windows, wallowing in a morass of self-despair made only more painful by the knowledge that all I am is of my own making …
When everything around me, even the kitchen ceiling, has collapsed and crumbled without warning. And I am left, standing alive and well, looking up and wondering why and wherefore.
At a time like this, which exists maybe only for me, but is nonetheless real, if I can communicate, and in the telling and the bearing of my soul anything is gained, even though the words which I use are pretentious and make you cringe with embarrassment, let me remind you of the pilgrim who asked for an audience with the Dalai Lama.
He was told he must first spend five years in contemplation. After the five years, he was ushered into the Dalai Lama’s presence, who said, ‘Well, my son, what do you wish to know?’ So the pilgrim said, ‘I wish to know the meaning of life, father.’
And the Dalai Lama smiled and said, ‘Well my son, life is like a beanstalk, isn’t it?’
Held close by that which some despise
which some call fake, and others lies
And somewhat small
for one so tall
a doubting Thomas who would be?
It’s written plain for all to see
for one who I am with no more
it’s hard at times, it’s awful raw
They say that Jesus healed the sick and helped the poor
and those unsure
believed his eyes
- a strange disguise
Still write it down, it might be read
nothing’s better left unsaid
only sometimes, still no doubt
it’s hard to see, it all works out

‘Twas Tea-time at the Circus
‘Twas tea-time at the circus: King Jimi, he was there
Through hoops he skipped, high wires he tripped, and all the while the glare
of the aching, baking spotlight beat down upon his cloak
and though the crowd clapped furiously they could not see the joke
‘Twas tea-time at the circus, though some might not agree
as jugglers danced, and horses pranced and clowns clowned endlessly
But trunk to tail the elephants quite silent, never spoke
and though the crowd clapped desperately they could not see the joke

In the Autumn of My Madness

In the autumn of my madness when my hair is turning grey
for the milk has finally curdled and I’ve nothing left to say
When all my thoughts are spoken (save my last departing birds)
bring all my friends unto me and I’ll strangle them with words
In the autumn of my madness which in coming won’t be long
for the nights are now much darker and the daylight’s not so strong
and the things which I believed in are no longer quite enough
for the knowing is much harder and the going’s getting rough

Look to Your Soul
I know if I’d been wiser this would never have occurred
but I wallowed in my blindness so it’s plain that I deserve
for the sin of self-indulgence when the truth was writ quite clear
I must spend my life amongst the dead who spend their lives in fear
of a death that they’re not sure of, of a life they can’t control
It’s all so simple really if you just look to your soul
Some say that I’m a wise man, some think that I’m a fool
It doesn’t matter either way: I’ll be a wise man’s fool
For the lesson lies in learning and by teaching I’ll be taught
for there’s nothing hidden anywhere, it’s all there to be sought
And so if you know anything look closely at the time
at others who remain untrue and don’t commit that crime

New ‘Islands’ and New ‘Wolf Parade’

I s l a n d s

Montreal’s Islands new album ‘Arm’s Way’ features some Longer songs, which is nice. Their 2006 debut album ‘Return to the Sea’ is one of the catchiest in recent years. I probably listened to the song ‘volcanoes’ a hundred times. One of the best parts of the new album is the 11 minute closer ‘vertigo if it’s a crime’.
